Galvanise - young people’s music tech event

There’s a great music tech day and hackathon for young people on 5th July in London, and tickets are free. GALVANISE is being hosted by Brixton’s Pound Café and features workshops, talks, performances, and a chance to explore the wonders of music tech.

Taking place between 9:30am and 5pm, the day is aimed at 16-25 year olds, will include some great performers and innovators, and visitors can expect to learn how to build their own instruments and hear from industry professionals.

GALVANISE founder Jacob Roberts-Mensah says, “The aim of this event is to expose young people to more career opportunities in the world of music. What’s more opening their minds to the fact that they can take ownership of (music) technology and inform how it is created and used”.

Educator, maker, entrepreneur and award-winning writer Helen Steer of DO IT KITS will be speaking at the event.

She has worked in education for a decade and specialises in getting new technologies into the classroom in a fun, easy way. Recent innovations include a “high five synth”.

Steer was previously a director of the innovative education platform Explorer HQ, with whom she published six books for children and educators.

DJ and technology enthusiast Adrian Holder will also be performing. He’s been known to play hacked record decks with a crisp packet and a can of Fanta! Adrian has an affinity for unusual soundscapes, and with over ten years of experience Adrian gained a degree in music production and DJ techniques from SSR in London. In 2016, he was awarded Mediaspec for his work. His performances have been seen by audiences at venues such as The Roundhouse in Camden and at various Hackoustic events.

Tim Yates from Hackoustic will also be part of the day - Hackoustic is a hacking group dedicated to exploring acoustics and instrument building. They run a host of different types of events related to acoustic hacking, including festivals, workshops and talks, and appear as part of larger events and venues such as the Tate Modern, the V&A, Cafe Oto, the Elephant and Castle Maker Faire among others.

The GALVANISE event is in conjunction with Wired4Music, Sound Connections and Livity. More speakers to be confirmed soon.
