Xmas Wish List 2016

What do these amazing artists want under the tree?

GAZELLE TWIN

I’d like three things:

  • I would like a Moog System 55 which would replace all my gear in totality.
  • A Linn LM-2 to contact Prince in the afterlife.
  • Moeck 5741 Subbass Recorder for when the fossil fuel runs out.

STEPHEN MALLINDER - WRANGLER / FOUNDER CABARET VOLTAIRE

  • A radio controlled headless bass
  • Lights on my fingers like the cool female techno producer I saw in Switzerland last year (but not those shit party ring lights you see online for a fiver)
  • A vocoder surgically fitted so that I can talk like a Tokyo train station announcer all the time
  • Donald Trump and Nigel Fromage to be outed as a couple

ESKA

I’d love a new bed with a tempur mattress, something so comfortable that I wouldn’t want to get out of it - I don’t sleep much.

MARTYN WARE - ILLUSTRIOUS COMPANY / HEAVEN 17 / B.E.F. / FOUNDER THE HUMAN LEAGUE

I’m involved with an organisation called In Place of War which creates music and radio studios for young people in places of hardship, giving them hope, and teaching them creative entrepreneurship.

I wish that all young people worldwide would have the opportunities (like I did) to express themselves and make the most of their talents.

SCANNER - ROBIN RIMBAUD

I’d like something to read over Christmas whilst recovering from eating too much fine food so a copy of TS Eliot - Annotated Poems Vol 1 & 2 would be welcome, or Alasdair Gray’s Every Short Story. I’ll let the elves help decide. Technically I’d like a tech wizard for the day to sit with me and determine how best to cable up my studio, a challenge I’m never quite ready for :-)

DEUX FURIEUSES

We hope people increasingly realise the difference between democracy and demagoguery and their responsibility to think for themselves. We hope that the weak, the voiceless and the vulnerable are brought in from the cold. We hope that identity politics becomes less important to us and we rediscover the interdependency we have with every living being on this planet.

We would like our voice to cut through in the music business which needs to change and some help to record the follow up to our album Tracks of Wire.

And we wouldn’t say no to a set of new shiny Zildjian cymbals!

AWATE

So my Xmas wish would be for an Akai MPC 2000xl. When I was fourteen, I had a notebook with all of my rhymes in it and the first page chronicled my attempts at getting one. My best bet then was to hang around UK hip-hop producers and hope they were throwing theirs out for a 2500. Either that or an SP-1200. I’m after that classic swing, basically!

HELEN MCCOOKERYBOOK

What I would like for Christmas is an extra room in my house. I’ve had a JV1080 for five years which is wedged under the kitchen table on top of a box of vinyl albums. The kitchen table is my studio and every time I work on anything. I have to clear the table and set up the equipment from scratch.

I would love to start programming pop tracks as I did about ten years ago, but it’s simply easier to set up an interface and write and record with electric guitar and vocals, then pack everything away at the end of the session and revert to its being a kitchen table again. What a luxury it would be to leave a keyboard and sound module set up ready and waiting for inspiration, and of course my six guitars ready and waiting to be played instead of stashed under the bed and brought out one by one.

Oh yes - and I’d also like one of these red trumpets. Andy Diagram plays one, so I know they must be good!

TOM FOX - VULPESTRUMENTS

For my own projects I wouldn’t mind a Bela platform to tinker with and experiment on, I’m aiming to do more interactive projects that this would be perfect for.

My daughter is turning 4 soon so I’ve been looking into STEM type toys for Xmas to trick her into learning. The Cubetto looks like a great way to introduce her to coding. She’s also, inexplicably, really into beatboxing at the moment, so a good rugged GoPro would be great to capture her doing that!
