The Sound Master Memory Rhythm SR-88 was one of the first programmable drum machines and was made in Japan in the 1980s. The now rare analogue machine features four voices - kick, snare, hi-hat and cymbal. It has limited storage - 6 patterns with 16 steps and 2 patterns with 12 steps - and is laborious to program, but its sounds are still highly regarded. It has been used by artists such as Cocteau Twins and Blancmange.
