Gender Chores
The openers were the beautifully-named Gender Chores, a Northern Irish three-piece from Bangor, County Down. Blasting out riot grrrl-influenced incisive and political songs with raw guitars and sparkling vocals, they got everyone fired up and warmed up all at the same time. They’re playing in Belfast on 1st March.
I, Doris
I, Doris are unmissable. Pioneers of #mummycore they are one of the most radical and fun bands we’ve ever seen. Whether it’s proclaiming a woman’s right to be mediocre, or a song based on the mummyflaws of the school run, they take a glittering disco punk meat cleaver to the gender challenges that no-one else is talking about. Armed with a keytar, a wealth of wit, and a communal I, Doris pledge, you can imagine these Londoners going down a storm at any kind of event. They were joined by a guest male Doris on drums who also donned the stage uniform of a red name-tagged apron. They play She17 #Shefest6 on March 10th.
The Hysterical Injury
Blinding sister/brother bass/drums duo The Hysterical Injury have been on our radar since before their first album ‘Dead Wolf Situation’, and it was a joy to hear them previewing tracks from their next release. Genius bass player and singer Annie Gardiner has an extraordinary sound big enough to smash all the pumpkins, and drummer Tom is equally ferocious.
You can read about the Bristol duo’s sound in our previous interview here, and their next show is in London on March 20th, with their new album released on the 21st.
ILL
Headliners were the very unsickly ILL, on a rare visit to London. Pumped with extra punk vitamins this four-piece from Manchester were winners of Loud Women’s ‘Hercury’ 2018 album prize with their debut ‘We Are ILL’. Their fierce, fun and furious post-punk pop was the perfect climax to a powerful night! They play Girl Gang Leeds Birthday Fest on March 2nd,
