This British synth company was set up in 1969 by the talented engineers, programmers and composers Dr. Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary and David Cockerell. The first synth was the VCS 3 and later models included the Synthi 100 and Synthi A series, as well as Vocoders. The VCS 3 was distinctive as it featured a neat matrix plugboard using pins, rather than cables. The company went head to head with Moog in the 70s. The synths were used by the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop which included Delia Derbyshire, and on series such as Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Artists who used EMS synths included David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, The Who, Brian Eno and Roxy Music, Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre.
