Saul Eisenberg tank drums are made from recycled gas cylinders with ‘tongues’ cut into them, and are played using drum mallets. They are hand made together with trumpet player Steve Chadwick so that they can be tuned to a scale, usually pentatonic. The harmonics are unusual and described by Mercury Prize nominee Sam Lee as ‘gritty’ but ‘warm’. Different tanks have different keys and scales. They have something of the Jamaican steel drum about them but are richer and deeper in sound. Steve and Saul perform as Tank & Trumpet.
